Here at ACR 2006
I’m now in Washington for the ACR conference (see explanation here). We’re half way through the Clinical Research Conference and I’m jotting some notes in the break. The theme of this part of the conference (actually a pre-conference) is ‘reducing disparities in prevalence and impact of rheumatic diseases’. We’ve heard a nice introductory talk by…

Bastards!
My paper has now been rejected by two big journals. How incredibly irritating. This means that I’ll have to submit it again, and wait around again, and possibly have to rewrite it again. That is not fun. But I’ll get the son-of-a-bitch published somewhere!

The ACR 2006 Scientific Conference
I’m glad to say it’s been a quiet today. To the best of my knowledge no one in my family has died. Something I’ve been wanting to mention lately but haven’t gotten around to (I hope you’ll forgive my distraction) is the upcoming American College of Rheumatology Annual Scientific Conference which starts this week. This…

Robert Kirkland Weber
In one of those tragic ironies, my Uncle Kirk just died. If you’re reading this, you’re can probably also see my post from yesterday on my mother’s death. Who could have predicted that they would die within hours of each other? Robert Kirkland Weber was the 3rd child of Jesse and Cliff Weber. I don’t…

Jane Arliss Vlad
My mother died early this morning. She was 74 and had a pretty good life, I think. I’d like to tell you a little about her. Jane Arliss Weber was born March 28, 1932 in Windsor, Ontario. She was the first natural child of Cliff and Jesse Weber, though she had an older adopted sister,…

Another Day in the Life …
Data – The data set is so big that my computer crashed. That’s only because bloody Microsoft Windows decided it had to update while my analysis was running. But I set it to run again overnight and had something by morning. Presentation – There was enough data analysed, and I could actually present it, though…

A Day in the Life …
Out of bed at 6:15. Out the door at 7:00. On the train at 7:13. Grab a latte. On to another train at 7:35. Onto the bus at 8:10. At work at 8:50. Read Dain Curse while on bus/train. Talk with the programmer about why my data looks weird. Learn that he’s right and that…

Whoo! Hoo!
Today was a big day! I got word that the NIH gave a large chunk of money on my behalf to the folks who own my student loans. I got on the web site and confirmed it. I am now several thousand dollars less in debt! What a happy day! Now to put this in…

The Maltese Malcon, part IV
OK, I think my obsession with the The Maltese Falcon has run its course now. I finished the book up last night. What a great novel! Hammett’s characters are very much 3-dimensional beings. Sam Spade is an extraordinarily complex character: good yet bad; greedy yet generous; always cagey; always smart; always looking out for himself.…

More Maltese Falcon
I’m not calling this part 4 yet, but if you’ve looked at my sidebar you’ll see that watching three movie versions has commpelled me to re-read the book. It’s great. Full book report to follow in a few days. And I’ll write about something to do with arthritis one day soon, promise.
